The electronic ID card

Data protection

A centralized storage of the data located on the electronic ID card does not occur. Only the same data will be stored in the ID registers of the ID authorities as was before the introduction of the electronic ID card (i.e. the personal data and the facial image). The fingerprints – if desired by the ID card owner – will only be stored on the RF chip and temporarily during the card manufacturing process. The fingerprints needed for registration and manufacturing are deleted after ID card production.

This is specified in § 26 of the Personalausweisgesetz (German National ID Card Law). Digital security mechanisms ensure that the data on the electronic ID card can only be read by authorized persons. It is also ensured, that these authorized persons only have access to data they require.
