Check the IT security of your products!
The IT Security Label makes it quick and easy to find out more about the IT security of digital products. Simply scan the QR code in online stores or directly on the packaging to access the BSI's product information page.
The essential security features of the product are clearly presented there. On this page, you will find up-to-date information on known vulnerabilities and associated updates. And not just at the time of purchase, but for the entire validity of the IT Security Label.
You can find out which products are already labelled using our search function.
Purpose of the IT Security Label
In the Internet of Things (IoT), consumers connect numerous devices and services, including routers, robot vacuum cleaners and surveillance cameras, to the internet or directly to each other. This makes everyday life more convenient and efficient.
It is often impossible to tell from the outside whether and how devices and services can be misused by attackers. For example, they can be exploited to carry out cyber attacks, tap into personal data or manipulate your own home network. This can result in damage to the users themselves or third parties, which manufacturers can counteract with basic security features.
Supporting manufacturers and providers who are committed to IT security promotes a responsible use of technology. This helps to protect consumers from cyber threats.
The BSI defines basic IT security requirements for devices and services. The manufacturer or service provider then test their product for conformity.
The manufacturer then submits an application for the IT Security Label to the BSI, which checks the documents for plausibility and requests further evidence if necessary.
If the assessment is positive, the BSI issues the IT Security Label for two years.
During this period, the BSI's Market Surveillance monitors all labelled products. It checks whether the labelled products comply with the requirements and may conduct tests on either a random or ad hoc basis.
The IT Security Label can help customers when making a purchase decision for an IT product,
summarize, in an understandable way, important facts and up-to-date information on the security features of a networked product or service,
make the security requirements visible to which the manufacturer of a product has committed itself and
offer manufacturers an incentive to raise the security level of their products.
Risks can still arise when using a labelled IT product. Consumers should therefore be aware of IT security in their everyday lives.
The BSI cannot guarantee that no security vulnerabilities will occur in a labelled product, nor can it rule out the possibility of attackers finding ways to overcome the security features of a product.
The IT Security Label is not a certification. In contrast to certification, the product is not tested by the BSI but by the manufacturer. Instead, the BSI market surveillance checks, on a random or ad hoc basis, during the full validity period of the label whether the labelled products comply with the requirements.
