Step 1: Identify a need for action

Cyber security is a top management priority

Information security is the prerequisite for successful digitalisation. Increasing cyber security is a crucial factor in a company's success and can establish clear competitive advantages. It is the responsibility of senior management to identify security risks, clarify responsibilities and implement appropriate safeguards.

Gain an overview of the cyber risks

What types of threat are there, who are the attackers and what damage can cyber attacks cause? The answers to these questions and more can be found in the document "Cyber-Bedrohungen--ein Einstieg" [Cyber threats--an introduction]. It provides easy-to-understand background information with helpful examples, and is also intended for users with less developed expertise in IT.

Maintain an overview of the current threat landscape

The BSI uses Bürger-CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team) to provide fast, expert information and warnings for citizens and small enterprises about the latest viruses, worms and other security vulnerabilities. Warnings can also be obtained simply by e-mail.

  • Information from the Bürger-CERT
  • Receive notifications from the Bürger-CERT by e-mail

Participants in the Alliance for Cyber Security can also access current warnings from the BSI as well as special situational overviews for individual security topics.

Identify and protect the "crown jewels"

Before selecting suitable safeguards, it is important to develop an overview of the cyber risks that actually affect your own company. Generally, the first step is to draw up an inventory of the data in your company and identify the "crown jewels". This data is essential to your business and your operating processes and should therefore enjoy maximum protection.
