A Secure Mobile Data Storage Device (SMD) is a product type comprising a portable storage device which can be physically connected via an appropriate interface (e. g. USB) to a host system and appropriate user guidance documentation for their secure use. Via the interface to the host system a user has access to the user data. Sensitive user data is protected against unauthorized access. The main features of an SMD for that purpose is that access to sensitive user data is allowed only after successful authentication of an authorized user and that an SMD employs cryptographic means to provide the necessary protection of sensitive user data.
