A VPN Gateway(VPN-GW)1 is a product type used to implement a secure exchange of VS-NfD classified data2 between a trusted and a remote trusted network via a potentially insecure network on layer 3 (network layer). In this document, "trusted network" means a network is suitable and approved for processing VS-NfD classified data. The VS-NfD classified data are transferred between the VPN-GW and its VPN remote peer via a secure connection, a so-called VPN tunnel. The VPN remote peer of a VPN-GW can be a VPN client or a remote VPN-GW in another trusted network. Trusted networks are linked by VPN tunnels.
