Information Security Consulting Unit for the Federal Government
BSI Services for the Federal Government
Trusted advice for federal agencies about questions involving any aspect of information security
The Information Security Consulting Unit for the Federal Government is the central point of contact at the BSI for enquiries from federal agencies about information security. The BSI provides its consulting on a confidential and manufacturer-neutral basis.
Guiding principles
One important goal for the security consulting unit is to help public authorities achieve a level of security that is consistent and appropriate for their protection needs. The consulting services it provides are tailored to the individual requirements of the requesting agency, meaning they can vary in terms of their nature and scope. As a first step, the BSI consultants work with those in charge at the agency to clarify the needs and requirements pertaining to its specific security goals. Certain kinds of requirements may affect the handling of classified information, for example, or particular kinds of protection required by law. The security consulting team also provides support to agencies for specific strategic digitalisation projects at the federal level.
The advice given by the BSI is based on IT-Grundschutz BSI as well as on theITsecurity models and information security management systems (ISMS) derived from this standard. Once a consulting project is complete, those in charge are capable of realistically assessing their security levels, developing models and implementing measures in order to better protect their information systems.
Contributing insights, leveraging synergies
The information security consulting provided to federal agencies also incorporates strategic aspects of the Federal Implementation Plan (2017). The overarching goals for information security are to ensure the confidentiality, availability and integrity of the information collected, processed and utilised within the federal administration. Other aspects, such as raising awareness among federal employees and conducting information security audits, can then be derived from these basic principles.
The BSI is also active in numerous committees that work on current issues within information security. Insights gained from this work are incorporated into the BSI’s consulting services, where they help ensure continuous improvements in security at federal agencies.
Details on the help available on a variety of topics and issues can be found in the internal area of the Information Security Consulting Unit for the Federal Government.
On the basis of the 2017 Federal Implementation Plan, the BSI also cooperates with the Federal Academy of Public Administration (BAköV) on the training and certification of information security officers working in public administration.
