Drones as a new cyber threat - How companies can protect themselves

date 27.02.2025

The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has identified a growing threat from the use of drones.
In a current working papar Overview of drone-based cyber threats and aspects of defence, the BSI analyses key threats that can emanate from drones and their payload: They range from espionage and surveillance using optical or thermal imaging cameras to targeted hacker attacks on radio communications and IT systems. This payload could be used against IT systems, networks, employees and important facilities such as data centres or (backup) power supply facilities. Drones can also be misused as carriers for explosive devices, chemical or biological substances in order to carry out attacks against cyber relevant assets. They can transport payload directly to a target object. As a result, conventional protective measures such as fences or shielding are becoming increasingly ineffective.
The working paper of the BSI is intended to help companies and organisations prepare for the new security risks and take appropriate protective measures.
Based on the findings of the BSI, appropriate countermeasures include a broad spectrum of technical, organisational and legal components. An important preventative measure is first of all to raise awareness and train all employees. This includes information campaigns, internal reporting channels for drone sightings and appropriate Standard Operating Procedures to react. Avoiding the labelling of or publications about sensitive parts of buildings and installations reduces the risk of spying. In addition, optical reconnaissance or the interception of radio communications can be made more difficult by using blinds or regular checking of the building-skin as well as the immediate surroundings for anomalous objects. In addition, the proven techniques of counter eavesdropping will help.
