BSI and the Cyber Security Authority of Singapore further expand cooperation to recognise IT security labels

In addition to smart consumer devices, the BSI IT Security Label will now also be recognised for routers in Singapore. In return, the cybersecurity label of the Cyber Security Agency in Singapore (CSA) will facilitate the granting of the IT Security Label in Germany. The bilateral arrangement on mutual recognition of the Cybersecurity Label (CLS) in Singapore and the German IT Security Label of the BSI was confirmed and extended at this year's Singapore International Cyber Week (SICW). David Koh, CEO of the Cyber Security Agency (CSA) Singapore, signed the agreement in the presence of Barbara Kluge, Deputy Head of the Directorate-General Cyber and Information Security, Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI).

Claudia Plattner, President of the BSI, confirms: ‘Routers play a key role in consumers’ smart homes. This makes it even more important that they are operated securely. The IT Security Label and the Cybersecurity Label make the security features of the devices transparent and comprehensible. We are therefore looking forward to further expanding our cooperation with Singapore in the future.’

In addition to the mutual recognition of products from the smart consumer devices product category published by BSI in accordance with the European IoT baseline standard ETSI EN 303 645, the extension now also includes the router product category, which is based on ETSI TS 103 848 and the associated test specification ETSI TS 103 928.

With the entry into force of the arrangement on 16 October 2024, routers with the German IT Security Label can now also receive a level 2 Cybersecurity Label in Singapore. In turn, level two or higher labels from Singapore allow manufacturers to go through a simplified application process for the German IT Security Label.

BSI is further expanding its cooperation with international cyber security authorities beyond Singapore. In mid-September, BSI signed a letter of intent with the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) in Seoul to promote cooperation. This marks the beginning of a collaboration to make digital products more secure and enable consumers to make reliable purchasing decisions. Other countries are also planning to introduce corresponding labelling systems in the upcoming years.

About BSI’s IT Security Label

BSI issues the IT Security Label after a manufacturer has checked that its device or service fulfils specific security requirements. BSI carries out a consistency check and monitors whether the labelled products fulfil the requirements throughout the validity of the label. BSI performs sampling on a routine or ad hoc basis, e.g., when vulnerabilities become known.

Consumers can use the label to find out about the security features guaranteed by manufacturers and providers of networked, internet-enabled products and services in a simple and understandable way via a short link or QR code before making a purchase.

Providers and manufacturers can use the IT Security Label to stand out in the market and prepare themselves now for the regulation of the European Cyber Resilience Act (CRA).
